The institute was formed in 2004 and comprises the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC) and the Photonics Communities within University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology. TNI-UCC has an established reputation for successful participation in EU research programmes over the last two decades (FP4-FP6). TNI-UCC’s participation in European advanced research programmes over the last 20 years has provided an important conduit for ICT excellence to Irish and European industry. TNI-UCC now works with global Tier 1 companies including IBM, ST Microelectronics, Thales, Alcatel, Philips, Intel, HP, BAE and Siemens. TNI-UCC has leveraged these collaborations to build its research expertise and technology portfolio that enables it to support long-term development of ICT sector. In terms of computing facilities, TNI-UCC runs a local high performance computer cluster with 125 quad-core 64 bit nodes, and 300 dual-core nodes linked with GBit Ethernet; 24 of these nodes are newly linked with Infiniband interconnect, increasing substantially the performance of the cluster. TNI-UCC also has access to the Irish national computing facility, ICHEC.
