ICN is a relatively new research organisation some 90 full-time researchers focused on new nanoscience and nanotechnology, including nanoelectronics, nanophononics, nanophotonics and nanofabrication, as well as novel nano and atomic-scale material studies of fundamental and applied character. ICN is gathering its existing nanofabrication tools and expertise and setting up a flexible fabrication platform for nanoelectronics to be operational in 2010. Two ICN groups participate here: the Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures Group headed by Professor Sotomayor Torres (P2N) and the Physics and Engineering of Nano Devices group headed by Prof Sergio Valenzuela (PEND), jointly comprising 14 full-time researchers.
Technical areas of expertise
P2N: Nanophotonics, energy and momentum relaxation mechanisms in nanostructures, nanoimprint lithography and self-assembly. More recently also in nanoscale thermal transport and nanometrology.
PEND: Quantum computation and manipulation, spintronic devices, relaxation mechanisms in spin systems and superconducting qubits, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).
